The California harvester ant is a larger native species, with workers typically measuring 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. They have a reddish-brown to dark brownish-red body, a large head relative to their body size, and noticeably long legs. A key identifying feature is the fringe of golden hairs found on the underside of the head, called a psammophore, which the ants use to carry sand and soil particles while excavating their nests.

In Southern California, California harvester ants prefer open, sunny areas with sparse vegetation and well-drained soil, which makes them common in undeveloped lots, foothill properties, dry landscaped yards, and areas bordering natural open space in places like the San Gabriel Valley and outlying parts of Los Angeles and Orange County. They’re easy to identify by their nest sites: a distinct mound of cleared soil, often with a bare, crater-like disk of ground around the entrance where the colony has removed all vegetation and debris. These nests can be a foot or more across and persist in the same spot for years.

California harvester ants are considered a problem primarily because of their sting, which is delivered by workers defending the nest and is well known to be more painful than that of many other ants found in the region. Because colonies often build mounds close to patios, play areas, walkways, or garden beds, the sting risk becomes a real concern for children, pets, and anyone doing yard work nearby. Their mound-building can also bare patches of lawn or landscaping over time.
