Carpet beetles are small, oval-shaped beetles, usually only an eighth of an inch long, with a mottled pattern of white, brown, yellow, and black scales that can make them look almost patterned or “camouflaged” up close. The adult beetles are often seen on windowsills, where they gather trying to get outside, but it’s actually their larvae that cause the property damage homeowners notice. The larvae are small, bristly, carrot-shaped, and covered in tiny hairs, often described as looking like miniature, fuzzy caterpillars.

In Los Angeles and Orange County homes, carpet beetle larvae are typically found in undisturbed areas: under area rugs and carpet edges, inside closets, in storage boxes, along baseboards, and within upholstered furniture. Adult beetles often enter homes through window screens or on cut flowers, then lay eggs near natural fiber materials. They’re especially common in homes throughout Torrance, Lakewood, and Downtown LA where older carpeting, wool rugs, or long-stored textiles provide an undisturbed food source for developing larvae.

The main concern with carpet beetles isn’t a health risk to people directly, but the property damage their larvae cause. They feed on keratin-containing materials such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and leather, chewing irregular holes into carpets, rugs, clothing, and upholstery. Unlike moths, carpet beetle larvae tend to leave behind shed skins and fecal pellets near the damaged material rather than silk webbing, which can help with identification. In some sensitive individuals, the tiny hairs on the larvae have also been associated with skin or respiratory irritation, according to pest management and public health sources.

Guarantee Pest Control has helped Los Angeles and Orange County families protect their carpets, rugs, and heirloom textiles from carpet beetle damage since 1958.
