The deer mouse gets its name from its coloring, which resembles a deer’s coat: a distinctly bicolor look with brownish-gray to reddish-brown fur on top and a crisp white underbelly, white feet, and a white underside to its tail. Adults measure roughly 3 to 4 inches in body length with a tail of similar or slightly longer length that is sharply bicolored, unlike the more uniformly colored tails of house mice. Deer mice have large, prominent eyes and ears relative to their body size and a more delicate, slender build than roof rats or Norway rats.
Deer mice are more commonly a rural and semi-rural pest, and in Los Angeles and Orange County they’re most often encountered in outlying and hillside areas, near open space, agricultural land, or undeveloped lots bordering residential neighborhoods. They typically nest outdoors or in outbuildings, garages, sheds, woodpiles, and vehicles that have been parked for extended periods, building nests from shredded fabric, insulation, or dried vegetation.
