If you’ve been bitten by a spider in Southern California, there’s a good chance it was a yellow sac spider — this is one of the most common biting spiders actually documented in California homes, far more so than species that get more attention online. Yellow sac spiders are small to medium, generally 1/4 to 3/8 inch in body length, with a pale yellow, cream, or light tan color overall and, in some cases, a slightly darker stripe running down the abdomen. Their legs are proportionally longer than an American house spider’s and often have slightly darker tips. Rather than sitting in an open web, they spin a small, flat, silken “sac” retreat, tucked into a corner, fold, or crevice, where they hide during the day and emerge to hunt at night.
In LA and Orange County homes, yellow sac spiders are frequently found where wall meets ceiling, behind picture frames, in the folds of curtains, inside stored boxes and clothing, and along baseboards. Outdoors, they hide in dense foliage, under eaves, and in woodpiles. Because they’re active nighttime hunters rather than web-sitters waiting for prey, they’re often encountered when a sleeping person rolls over onto one in bed, or when reaching into stored clothing or boxes — which is part of why bites are relatively common compared to other local spiders.
A yellow sac spider bite is typically described as an initial sharp pinch, followed by localized redness, swelling, and discomfort that can take longer to heal than a typical insect bite. While generally not considered dangerous, bites can be uncomfortable and, in some cases, slower-healing wounds warrant a closer look. As with any spider bite, it’s best to have it evaluated by a medical professional rather than self-treat, especially if symptoms worsen or don’t improve within a few days.
Since 1958, Guarantee Pest Control has helped Los Angeles and Orange County families deal with the spiders that are actually common in our area — and yellow sac spiders top that list. Our technicians will inspect the corners, folds, and hidden spaces where they like to build their sac retreats and recommend an effective treatment plan tailored to your home, with eco-friendly Guarantee Green options available.
